The pig is held in ill repute;
He’s thought to be a coarse- grained brute.
A slur-per up of slops, the swine,
He’s never asked indoors to dine.
But if the loathsome pig were fed,
On Marzipan and fine white bread,
And if he were allowed to shower,
and dust himself with flour,
And spend a week in Canner Or Florence,
Would we still hold him in abhorrence?
Or would we find ourselves recanting,
And crying: “Oh Pig, thou art enchanting!”
From the book: Consider the Lemming by Jeanne and William Steig

Winston came to live with us May 27th. She was weened two weeks previous. I’ve been concerned Oscar (our beagle) would eat her when we were not home so she’s been in the barn. She has plenty of food, water, things to play with, a heat lamp and straw. What more could a pig want?
She went from “approachable” to ”don’t touch me” in 10 days. This morning I took her over to a fenced in area with lots of plants . When I checked on her at lunch she had this contented look in her eyes as if to say…” I love my new place! ”
I grew up on a farm, but I was still amazed and the radical transformation in Winston’s attitude in just an hour.
Caused me to wax philosophical……..
A change of location can do wonders to a pig’s attitude.
Fences are for the pig’s protection….you never know what is outside that fence that would love to eat you
Pigs need space to run and play.

I love Winston! That’s so great that you gave her a place to play! Awesome! My cocker spaniel is named Winston … so I feel there is a keen connection!
Hope all is well with you and your little Winston! He is a cutie!

update to post 6/9/08
When I got home tonight Winston was no where to be found….she was not in her fenced in area and for 30 minutes we looked everywhere. All around this area is open field with tall grass. It appeared she had gotten under the fence and took off. Oscar (our beagle) was slinking around which made me think maybe he knew something…like he’d found her and made short work of her, like he’d done with our chickens a couple of years ago. I honestly didn’t have much hope if we ever found her, she’d be alive. A little 15 pound pig that doesn’t want to be found in 3 acres of tall grass probably won’t be found (except by some predator w/ a nose for pork)
As I headed back to the house, I saw her….she was standing outside the fence next to the big red barn…how in the world she got there is beyond me. I was already thinking I’d be writing something about what happens when we step beyond the boundaries in our lives ment to protect us…needless to say, she’s back in the building she started out in until we can figure out where she escaped from. Glad Winston is back home, safe and sound. Maybe some chicken wire nailed to the inside of the fence, staked down to the ground? That’s what we had to do with our dog who somehow could wiggle out of the tightest spaces.

Yipes! That little rascal! Maybe the outside pen area is good for playing but she needs the safety and security of the barn for bedtime? (Plus, a bedtime story and maybe some warm milk?)
