Don’t Just Make Money….Make Memories

By DM

Memory Number One

Whenever I see one of these  I  try to stop.

Yesterday I spotted a stand  out in the country in the middle of nowhere on a gravel road.  As I drove by, I spotted a card table and pitcher under a big old tree.  The kids were up by the front door of their house so I wasn’t 100% sure it was a real lemonade stand or not.

45 minutes later, I had to drive by their house again, this time they were ready….4 kids, (probably 5 to 8 yrs old) were jumping up and down, screaming as I drove by so I hit the brakes and put it in reverse.   Two of the girls came up to the passenger window with a bowl of something.

“What are you selling and how much is it?”  I asked…

“A bowl of pudding and it costs one dollar”  the oldest one said.

“Perfect” I said..”Here’s a dollar”.

She handed me a Styrofoam bowl covered  with plastic wrap and a spoon.

You should have seen the smile on those girls faces.

“Thank you , thank you”   they kept telling me.

     Memory Number Two

I heard a song on my Dewalt work radio yesterday that made me want to dance  called “Nothing better to do“.

John has got me listening to the country station at work… (I was more of a of a rock and roller growing up…U2, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Little Feat )  He told me it was a new one by   LeAnn Rimes so I googled it last night.    As an aside, I didn’t watch the video, just had the audio playing on the computer  . The next thing you know, I grabbed the Mrs and we were  shaking it in the computer room.  (Just like Kristina  the Home Engineer and her hubby..she had a link at her blog a while back with the two of them jamming to something…go over there and ask her to repost it if you want :-)

    Oh great. Now I’ve got;
“You’ve got to stop and smell the pudding” in my head.

I did something I’ve never done before….went golfing. The neighbor girl is going off to college and wanted to have a fun day so she and I went golfing….the most fun I’ve had in a while. She’s only golfed once before so we were a perfect pair…neither one of us knew what we were doing. An old guy that had been watching us finally give us advice on what club to use an when, the only club I knew was the putter. It took us about 3 hours to golf 9 holes but we had a blast!!!!

I always stop by these stands. The kids are so appreciative and it amazes me how excited they get at such what seems to me little money.

One of my favorite things is when the magazine or candy sales kid comes to my front door. I always buy candy and usually give it away. Not so much on the magazines though.

However, what I do with each of them is help coach them with t heir presentation. Some of them are quite good other are not.

I tell them not to ask “if” I want to buy any candy bars but when they present to the next person they should say why they are selling and ask them “How many bars would you like?” (with a smile). They at least listen to me since I have already given them money. lol

I actually just returned from my “something fun”: I went to the Pewabic Pottery annual sale, where I bought some art tiles which I plan to use to make something for my kitchen. :) I also got a couple of decorative tiles that I may give as gifts (or keep for myself), and a bigger tile to use as a trivet that only cost me $3.50. :) Oh. And this past Thursday, I got pillow fabric. It’s been an HGTV type week, but it’s been good!

I am yet to experience this thing of stands at the side of the road for lemonade and pudding. Here we do our shopping on the side of the road. Literally there will be cigarette stall (not for me anymore), fresh food stand a couple of metres down the road, then a shoe stand… all adults. Hmm wonder if this would work here.

Very cute memories, they really do make life richer and warmer!

I know you are still looking for work…I think you should give it a whirl….maybe you could sell monkey photos or something…you seem to have an endless supply of those darn things :-)

This is my first time coming to your blog and I really like it. You seem like such a nice man. I live right above you in MN. I love the pudding stand idea. It’s not just for lemonade anymore. I also LOVE the pig thing. Are they all in disease free barns now? Once you take them out they can’t go back in? Where does he live? Inside or out?? Does he snuggle your toes when you sleep? Funny how he’s on a leash. I have a kitten who’s on one too. Love the pic also.

  9. DM Says:

Joy, you asked about Winston the Pig..she is our only pig..and has her own apartment plus outdoor walking area…no diseases here…and nope she will not snuggle @ my feet, no matter how much she begs and whines…she will eventually get to over 600 pounds (maybe even larger) so @ some point I will not be able to take her on a leash becuase she can be stubborn..and if a 600 pound pig doesn’t want to go somewhere (or go somewhere she shouldn’t) then that will be the end of her walks on a leash…so far, I’m still the boss. BTW she (Winston) has her own facebook page…check out Winston Randolph..she has 17 friends so far I think. :-)

  10. Joy Says:

That is so funny. I’m glad she’s a she and not a he. A 600 boar would not be a lot of fun. I got knocked off a pig trailer once with 4-800 pounders fighting inside. One of my most scary moments. She’s adorable though. That pic of her on the leash just stuck me very cute. Do you find it hard to eat pork?

  11. krislinatin Says:

yeah, DM, do you find it hard to eat pork? ;)

  12. krislinatin Says:
